It has been a long time since I've encountered such a well balanced Paranormal Romance that introduces a new mythology, a new couple, and what looks to be a very promising series without a hitch. Hilaire's effort particularly shines compared to some recent disappointing DNF experiences, she has created her own variation of vampires, angelic-warriors, and demons without tripping over mythology, cliche, or clunky writing.
Roland's past and the Paladin culture brought to mind Meljean Brook's Guardian
series in the best possible way. There is a strong presence of God as the Generalissimo of the Paladins. Their society has become hidebound and stagnant and Generalissimo appears to be shaking things up. Despite the heartbreaking circumstances of Gabriella's existence (trapped in a 14-year-old body by her mother's betrayal), she has distinct appeal as a future heroine.
At a time when many established Paranormal Romance series seem to be imploding under their conceit (i.e. - trying to stretch a world and mythology to the 10th, 14th, bazillionth installment), Hilaire has started a series that is intriguing, well-written, and oh so welcome.
